Ralls Janet Apple

The apple Ralls Janet (synonyms Ralls Genet and Rawls Jennet) is believed to come from cuttings given to Thomas Jefferson by Edmund Charles Genet, French ambassador to the United States from 1793 to 1794. According to documents gave Jefferson cuttings for nursery owner Caleb Ralls, in Amherst County, Virginia, who grafted them and then spread the variety throughout Virginia. In time, Ralls Genet became a favorite apple in Ohio Valley, as it due to late flowering did not get frost damage. Hence the nickname of Neverfail. The apple Ralls Genet has had a major impact on both the Japanese and Chinese apple breeding programs. For example, the known Japanese Fuji apple 1962 are a cross between Ralls Genet and Red Delicious.

The fruit is medium to large with thin greenish-yellow skin covered with pink and red with dark red stripes. The flesh is yellowish, fine-grained, crisp and juicy.

The apple ripens in October and can be stored a long time. (UK)
